Hi all,

A sidewalk plaque on Arabat Street in Moscow shows a shamrock with a hammer and sickle, The plaque is dedicated to one Paul McGuire. Paul McGuire appears to be (or was) Irish and Communist.

I saw the plaque on my trip to Russia last August. (I even took a photo of the plaque, but it's too big to add to this message.) I'm curious. Can anyone give me more information on this Paul McGuire?

Inquiries to the Communist Party of Ireland have drawn a blank.

    Hi Henry,

Surprisingly I did get a reply from the Communist Party of Ireland. Anonymous and short ("never heard of him"), but a reply non the less.

One of the visible CPI members died recently, and there was a big turnout at Glasnevin. I don't remember his name, but he was a member of the Connolly Column of the International Brigade that fought on the Republican side in the Spanish Civli War of the mid-1930s.

You seem to be a History student too. At least you visited some of my posts.

Where ar you? Ireland? America? Other?

im in belfast ed , yes always loved history ed especially local history , the c.p.i was quite big at one time here ed , it tried to be a bridge between both communities but ireland north and south catholic and protestant are very conservitive and the word communist was to them very scary , although the c.p.i was a very mild sort of communism akin to the early british labour party .a lot of the northern c.p.i members where int brigade veterans also a lot of its members where the founders of the northern ireland civil rights assc , their club in donegal st belfast was vary popular due to beer costing 20 pence a pint back then, belfast ones know a bargain

My ex -husband's family are/were all CP members, wonderful, wonderful people, and as you rightly say HT, more akin to the old Labour left. Dennis Healey (former UK Chancellor) was a CP member in the 1930s.

The CP had a club in Essex Street in Birmingham, Luke Kelly was a regular there in the sixties when he lived in Brum, he and the ex got ratarsed together a few times apparently, although it's more likely that Luke would have drunk with Cousin Gordon, who was a musician of some renown and still is, he's now living back in Glasgow.

He (Gordon McCulloch) was a founder member of the Ian Campbell Folk Group - some older UK based members may remember them from the 60s.

Ian and his wife Lorna are the parents of Ali Campbell of UB40 fame, far more famous than his dad was, it has to be said.

Hi mcneely this is only a thought but what about checking old newspapers - usually if there was a murder it would have been reported. Here is a Co Tyrone link check it out there might be something:

    http://fre...index.html

Again I was thinking about John McGuire (the policeman) would there be anything about him in the national archives there.
