He suggests that we were once friends. Yes, it is true that I extended myself to him without really knowing the real Hal Taggart. He never replied to my gesture of good will, that malevolent cuss. Hal is insolent, insulting, half-cocked, and paranoid. He seems to believe that he is omnicient, and he has a slight tinge (understatement) of narcissim. His father probably told him unceasingly that he would never amount to anything and that he was a know-nothing, while beating him after a few days out with the boys drinking it up in the pubs and whoring around. His mother was probably as cold as ice, shoving him off to the the Catholic Brother's Academy where he learned genuine mercy and forgiveness at the end of a sodomite monk's furious rod.
