It's been a gorgeous, warm spring so far; winter's returning for a few days so we are all breaking out the sheets, agrifleece, etc. Does anyone else grow hellebores?

The most common hellebores look like single roses, but they bloom in the winter and early spring. I'll try to post a few photos of them; I like anything that's tough enough to stand up to our crazy weather. Some of the best clumps I've seen--and my first sighting of them--were at National Botanic Gardens in Dublin.

We call them "winter roses".

Noun 1. winter rose - European evergreen plant with white or purplish roselike winter-blooming flowers
Christmas rose, Helleborus niger, black hellebore
hellebore - any plant of the Eurasian genus Helleborus

Winter blooming is nice, there's a limited number of winter flowers available.
