Part of the fun of any garden is the lovely butterflies the flowers and blossoms attract.

I found this link... what beautiful creatures. The picture of this Peacock butterfly looks similar to a large moth we use to have here with "eyes" on its wings. Have not seen one in many years. These are the first Irish butterflies I've ever seen. We have different butterflies too like the Monarch. I will get a pic to show. I am guesing that butterflies are found most everywhere?

I've seen swallowtail butterflies already with this early warmth we have been having lately. I planted rue and fennel for their hardiness and beautiful foliage; turns out they are both caterpillar food for swallowtails. By mid summer the leaves are a little gnawed on, but it means I can "grow my own" butterflies! And yes we have monarchs, since we are on the fall migration route to their hibernation grounds in Mexico. It's great to have that link--thanks, Maureen!

This is the closest I could find relating to NZ butterflies.

Apparently there are 23 species

    Hi Maureen

Was out in the garden today and there on the flowerbed was actually the Peacock butterfly as in your photo - stunning looking, and seemingly quite early, but the weather has been relatively warm for the past few weeks. Didn't have the camera to hand so couldn't ge a snap of it.

They are such pretty things, the butterflies.
we get a lot that float down from Malaysia. I don't know all the names of butterflies, all I know that they are beautiful and really make a garden prettier
There is a butterfly heaven not far from my home. It is just native trees and bushes but whatever else is there, the butterflies there just love it.

Check out this link.. while I see it being very educational and fun for adults and kids alike,I wonder what people do with the adults? Do they release them, or keep them in the habitat for the lifecycle? Maybe I missed it lol... we had a dove release at my daughters wedding last June, it was lovely..a butterfly release is also available. I didnt like that idea, the butterflys are from many different places, for color etc.. and they arent use to the climate possibly, and could starve. I dont think people think of that when they release them.

My daughter's getting married next year - I think we'll have a slug release - I've certainly got enough of them to supply them myself

me too aine... I say leave the butterflies alone as far as the dove release goes... the doves have been trained by their owner to fly back to a specific place.
