I love gardening, although I am not that good at it, and I guess I cannot do as much as I would like, I think my favourite flowers are lilies, although there are so many to choose from! I likewarm sunny days in the garden, but I also especially like MILD late winter days when I like to look round the garden and see if anything is growing, if it is I know spring is just around the corner, what a great group to have.

I've never put moss around my roses...haven't got any maybe its because I live in a warmer climate.
A lot of people who fiddle with thier roses put mushroom mulch and rose food pellets.

I find that the roses I have really, love the clay soil I have. I don't as its a devil to dig a hole in.

lol but i bet it's a good workout for the arms i've never heard of mushroom mulch--will have to look-up---there are so many wonderful tips here--i live in climate that always has high humidity--so many lakes, streems, rivers, etc all over state and general area of country. they consider it drought when we go more than 3 days without rain in the spring and summer! but they sure do wish it's gone during tornado season, now don't they?

In our summer the humidity is very high where I am...no tornados here thank goodness, only cyclones once in a blue moon....like about 20 years ago. We did have a Tsumani warning two weeks ago...yikes!

I tend to get moss on grass, and any brick walls, the only thing I know about roses is that they can get 'black spot' that makes me think of a name possibly for a pirate!! or a serious illness, however perhaps the ground is too wet, but I'm not sure what would help, would adding a bit of sand to the soil help to make it a bit lighter and not hold the moisture so much?

as for the soil being too wet, i wouldn't know for sure, but couldn't that come down to the drainage in the bed itself? we have some gravel
in yard because of drainage in general. wonder if using some pea-gravel around base of bushes might help? Lord, i love this site!

I think you might have something there wildflower, the less moisture, maybe the less moss. Maybe having the roses up higher would help too, like in a planter box or raised bed. Hard to do for an elderly person, but with help possibly. I couldn't find any specific info on the rose-moss issue, but still inquiring

Hi jools, thank you,I have been collecting pics and graphics for many years now.

Yes, weeding can be a merciless chore. With my hand arthritis problem, I wear hand splints when pulling or planting to protect my joints, and I don't do more then I need to of weeding. My family helps me with the little rototiller or any hard work. My garden isn't really large, just I make use of everywhere lol!
